While these can be useful, they often compromise the primary function of the knife. A hollow handle eliminates full tang construction, significantly weakening the knife. Saw teeth can be helpful but take up valuable blade real estate. The best approach is usually a simple, robust knife design with a separate fire starter and saw if needed.

Testing your survival knife before depending on it in the field is crucial. Practice batoning wood by placing the blade on a log and striking the spine with another piece of wood to split it. Try creating feather sticks for fire starting. Process kindling and tinder. Prepare food. The knife should feel comfortable and secure in your hand during all these tasks. Maintenance of survival knives is straightforward but essential. Keep the blade clean and dry when possible. Apply a light coat of oil to high-carbon blades to prevent rust.
